Mornings Matter More Than You Think
Most tradies stumble out of bed, grab coffee, and react to whatever the day throws at them. The best operators start differently—with intention.
Here's a morning routine designed for the tradie life.
The Night Before (5 Minutes)
Your morning actually starts the night before:
- Check tomorrow's schedule
- Load the ute with materials for first job
- Check traffic/route to first appointment
- Set clothes out (especially if early start)
This eliminates morning scramble and decision-making.
Wake Up: Same Time Every Day
Whether it's 5am or 6:30am, consistency matters. Your body adapts to routines. Random wake times = constant tiredness.
Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep. Yes, even tradies need it.
First 10 Minutes: Don't Touch Your Phone
Your inbox is other people's priorities. Give yourself 10 minutes before diving in:
- Shower and dress
- Proper breakfast (not just coffee)
- Mental preparation for the day
Emails and messages can wait 10 minutes.
The Quick Review (5 Minutes)
Before leaving the house:
- Check schedule: What jobs, where, what time?
- Review messages: Any overnight emergencies or changes?
- Top 3 priorities: What MUST get done today?
This takes 5 minutes but prevents the "what am I doing today?" confusion.
The Ute Check (2 Minutes)
Before rolling out:
- Materials for today's jobs loaded?
- Tools in place?
- Phone charged?
- Lunch packed?
Forgetting something = trip to Bunnings = wasted time and money.
The Drive: Productive Time
Use drive time wisely:
- Podcasts (industry or business)
- Audiobooks
- Mental rehearsal of the day
- Phone calls (hands-free) if needed
Dead time becomes development time.
First 15 Minutes On-Site
Set the tone for the job:
- Brief chat with customer (if home)
- Walk the job site
- Identify any surprises before starting
- Confirm the plan
15 minutes of planning prevents hours of problems.
The Daily Non-Negotiables
No matter how busy:
- Proper breakfast
- Morning schedule review
- Phone charged
- Ute stocked for the day
Skip these and the whole day suffers.
What NOT to Do in the Morning
- Don't hit snooze 5 times: Get up or set a later alarm
- Don't skip breakfast: You'll crash by 10am
- Don't start with social media: It eats time and mental energy
- Don't wing it: Know the day's plan before leaving
Sample Schedule
For a 7am first job:
- 5:30am: Wake, shower, dress
- 5:50am: Breakfast + coffee
- 6:10am: Quick schedule review, check messages
- 6:20am: Ute check, load anything missed
- 6:30am: Leave for first job
- 6:45am: Arrive, set up
- 7:00am: Customer available, start job
The Bottom Line
How you start determines how you finish. A solid morning routine takes 30 minutes but saves hours of chaos, stress, and mistakes.
Try this for one week. Adjust to what works for you. Lock in the routine. Watch your days improve.
